What is medical tourism?

Medical tourism is the practice of travelling to another country to receive medical care, dental care, surgery or other types of treatment equivalent to or better than the care you can receive in your own country. The main reasons for medical tourism are to cut down on waiting times or avoid them completely, to gain access to care, and to receive higher-quality specialised care – frequently at a lower cost in the bargain. Medical tourism can cover virtually any type of health and medical care, including advanced surgery, dental care, psychiatric care, alternative treatments and cosmetic surgery.

As an EU citizen, you are entitled to health and medical care services within the EEA countries and Switzerland, provided that the treatment is medically necessary. You will generally be reimbursed for the cost of your treatment abroad up to the cost for equivalent treatment provided in your home country.

Is it safe?

This is probably the first and most important question people ask when it comes to medical tourism. All medical procedures entail a certain level of risk, irrespective of where they are performed. At Swedish MedCare, we are eager to offer you the best conceivable service to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We take care of all practical matters to allow you to relax. Our Medical Advisory Board has run rigorous checks on all of our affiliate providers in terms of safety, equipment standards, quality and service, and only the very best are admitted into our network. In choosing our partners, we take the following into consideration:

  • ISO certification, which shows that the healthcare provider adheres to best practices and recognised quality standards in the industry.
  • The validity of all local licenses and certifications.
  • References from former patients and established experts.

We assign priority to partners whose staff have experience working in countries recognised as leaders in the medical field in Europe, North America and Asia.

What medical services are available?

At present, Swedish MedCare collaborates with partners that offer general and specialised medical diagnostics, eye diagnostic and treatments, dental care, aesthetic/cosmetic treatments, fertility treatments, orthopaedic diagnostics and surgeries, digestive diseases examination and treatment, neurology issue treatment, spa programs for rehabilitation and relaxation.

What about the quality?

Many of the specialists working at Swedish MedCare’s partner clinics have trained and worked in countries recognised as leaders within medicine and healthcare in Europe, North America and Asia. Our Medical Advisory Board places particular emphasis on our affiliates’ medical standards and safety, and on the credentials and experience of the specialists we choose to work with.

Can I inspect my specialist’s credentials?

We will be happy to provide you with references upon request.

Should I tell my doctor?

You are under no obligation to tell your doctor, but we recommend that you discuss the option of receiving treatment abroad with your doctor. In case you intend to opt for treatment cost reimbursement according to EU legislation it might be needed to have your doctor' s referral letter. Once you have decided to schedule treatment with Swedish MedCare, your SMC assistant will help you with any questions you may have – if necessary including communication between your doctor at home and our affiliates as needed.

Will I be able to communicate with specialists and other medical staff?

Generally speaking, you will communicate with specialists and medical staff in English. In the rare case where this is not possible, your SMC assistant will always be on hand to help you. Our staff speak English, German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Latvian and Russian. We will do our best to accommodate any special language needs you may have.

Will any follow-up be required? What happens then?

That depends on the treatment. Follow-up is recommended for some medical procedures, and you can choose whether you wish to return for further treatment or to continue the course of treatment at home. We recommend that you discuss these options with your doctor before travelling, so that you have all the information you need to make a decision.

Will you arrange accommodation and transportation?

We offer rooms at a modern and comfortable four-star hotel as part of our SMC Assistance service. Your assistant from SMC will greet you at the airport or ferry terminal with a car and driver and take you to your hotel. The SMC assistant sees to all the details during your stay, and will transport you to and from treatments, and to the airport or ferry terminal once it is time to go home.

Can I bring someone along on the trip?

You are more than welcome to bring family and friends! We can arrange accommodation, recreational activities and spa therapy for them if desired. Please contact us for more information.

Do you provide medical advice?

SMC provides medical advice as part of the other services we provide. We do not provide a separate advisory service, however. Our job is to make sure you get the diasgnostics and treatment you want and need, and to make your stay as positive an experience as possible.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper if I arranged everything myself?

You can naturally search for information and schedule examinations and treatments yourself, but our Medical Advisory Board has made every effort to ensure that you receive professional treatment at competitive, affordable prices. Only affiliates who provide modern therapy are invited to join our network. We also offer our SMC Assistance service in order to meet your practical needs and coordinate your trip. Choosing Swedish Medcare saves you time, money and energy.

What do you do with my personal information?

We require all available medical information about you in order to propose a proper course of treatment. All your personal and medical information will be treated confidentially, and will only be shared with our affiliates to ensure that you receive the best possible treatment.

Is it possible to schedule additional treatments?

Our goal is to offer you the treatments that best meet your wishes and your needs. Please contact us with information about what you’re looking for, and we will propose the most appropriate treatment options for you. Naturally, it is also possible to combine several different medical treatments during your stay, or to combine the treatment with recreation and relaxation.

What happens if something goes wrong?

Our network of affiliates is made up exclusively of medical facilities that maintain the highest quality standards and which are staffed by skilled, experienced specialists. Our specialists are professionals whose practice is based on a track record of successful treatments and satisfied customers. They have built up their good reputation over many years of medical practice. All medical procedures entail a certain level of risk. Should a dangerous situation arise, our specialists possess both the training, the resources and the experience needed to handle such situations in a prompt and professional manner. What should I do if I cannot find the treatment I am interested in on your website?

Our website lists a selection of the most common types of treatment we offer. We are always expanding our network of affiliates.
